A somber first day for New York Fashion Week this season.
While the fashion community mourned the loss of one of their own with touching tributes all around (our thoughts go out to Alexander McQueens friends and family, his genius goes without saying) the runways echoed the cold and melancholy feelings of the industry.
A few bright lights in an otherwise dark, futuristic and rather serious FW2010. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Rachel Bilson has a new obsession. Ok, so it's not as compulsive as the Sienna Miller/Prada bag debacle of summer 2009 just yet, but it seems to be the beginnings of a steady relationship. And we all know when Rachel wears something more than once it's love (exhibit A. the 3.1 Phillip Lim bow bag she was photographed with many a time). This time around Rachel's loving Mary Jane flats from Tila March. And why not? The "ballerine elastique" flats are the perfect transition piece from Winter to Spring. As RBils shows us, tights and jeans work perfectly with this modern mix of two staples in footwear (the flat and mary jane) but let's just take a moment to picture it paired with some floral shorts, a mini or even (GHASP) linen overalls (my new obsession for spring). Me thinks that Ms. Bilson has stumbled upon the ultimate in between season footwear.

Ok, so I know her morals tend to be a bit compromised. But I don't care. I find Sienna Miller to be absolutely beyond 100% fabulous. Her G.I. Joe tour, or as I liked to call it Sienna Fashion Month, took her all over the globe in some of the most stylish looks of the year. Isabel Marant, Alexandre Herchcovitch, Peter Pilotto and a slew of other designer looks accompanied her all over the world and put her back front and center on the fashion scene.
Seems her exploits outside of the red carpet took a backseat to not only her designer duds at the most high profile events of the year but also to her day to day looks while she navigated the streets of NYC during her Broadway stay. Giving us not only some ground breaking fashions but also some inspiring every day looks to try at home.
And am I the only one who's just thrilled about the Jude/Sienna reunion? Here's hoping she keeps the boho look coming back year after year.
Zoe Saldana what would 2009 fashion be without you? Sure I've followed your rise to fame since Center Stage and Guess Who? but most of the world didn't get to know you until the world wide promotional tour for Star Trek. And wow them you did with looks so incredibly stylish that they landed you on every best dressed list from here to Timbuktu. Alaia, Prabal Gurung (props on being the first to wear a dress from the then relatively unknown designer), Emilio Pucci and so on and so forth. And did she stop there? Hell no. Ms. Saldana kept the fashion party going in 09 with the promotional tour for Avatar - yes that would be her second major blockbuster of the year. For Avatar Zoe's tastes became even more sophisticated. Show stoppers included a mini Versace and a silver RM by Roland Mouret mermaid dress.
And that doesn't even count Zoe's endless red carpet appearances outside of the promotional circuit. The pseudo newcomer really made a name for herself with her ballerina like long legs and Audrey Hepburn like carrying of the neck - a perfect posture for carrying a dress from the most desired designers in town.
Ladies and gentleman we present you nominee number 1 for 2009's Top Gun...Zoe Saldana. We know 2010 will give us way more Zoe fashions, lucky for us she has at least one movie to promote (Death at a Funeral) and you know the Avatar DVD release will get a big red carpet to do.
Feeling nostalgic for 2009 yet? Well considering I "dropped the ball" on the yearly recap it's time to start looking back. I know January 3rd seems a bit early to have thoughts of yesteryear, and a little late to look back on the wonders of 2009, but we're going to do it anyways. My bad.
It seems every year a select few Hollywood ladies outdo themselves on the red carpet. And 2009 was no different. In my humble opinion there were a very distinct six who shined more than all others. Granted five out of these six girls had the advantage of movie promotional tours to serve as the stage for showcasing some of the year's most fashionable looks. One thing's for sure, it was a tough call to even narrow it down to six, but looking back these were the ones who made the biggest impact on 2009 Hollywood Fashion. Again in my humble opinion.
And the first nominee is...
Our dear Natalie Portman was at it again last night. Seems Nat's gotten back in touch with her inner fashionista as of late and she's made quite the splash on a few red carpets the past week. Sure she's got a movie to promote (are you excited to see Brothers?), but we'd like to think she just felt the overwhelming need to make a style statement and show the world she's still the most beautiful ingenue out there. For her third turn on our most stylish list in a week, Natalie chose a dazzling, and very holiday season appropriate, sequin tank dress from Proenza Schouler's Spring 2010 collection for IFP's 19th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards. We also give props to Natalie, and of course her fabulous and beyond cool stylist Kate Young, for choosing some of the greatest designers out there - Jason Wu, Vena Cava and Proenza all in one week, oh my.
No clue what I'm talking about? Let me walk you down memory lane with Natalie's other stylish picks from last week after the jump... more, more, more
